Purchase Health Insurance in 2016 or Face IRS Penalty

Purchasing health insurance is the law

According to the federal ACA law, most people must have health insurance coverage in 2016 or pay a penalty. The penalty, to be enforced by the IRS, will be either 2.5 percent of household income or a flat dollar amount of $695 per adult and $347.50 per child under 18. Family maximum penalty is capped at $2085.

Health Insurance Options in Missouri

Individuals in Missouri who are self-employed, sole practitioners, part-time employees, individuals and spouses not covered by a company group plan, or unemployed may purchase an individual/family plan from:

  • A national health insurance company

  • The federal exchange

Consumers should shop around, obtain quotes and choose an individual/family plan during the open enrollment period.

Open Enrollment dates

Health insurance open enrollment for individual/family plans starts on November 1, 2015 and ends on January 31, 2016. Purchase by December 15, 2015, if you want your insurance to be effective on January 1, 2016.
